Let’s face it, in the world of consumables and legal herbs, Dabs have made their mark. For many, they are the preferred blend of choice that is not only easier to use, but also much more potent when compared to the natural stuff. What are Dab Rigs?

A dab rig is a special type of water pipe that is created specifically to use with concentrates as opposed to legal dry herbs. They are intended to create vapor, as opposed to smoke which is what you get when you burn a dry blend. Dab rigs are much smaller than handheld bongs and pipes and they also have a smaller space inside of the unit. They are very compact, discrete, and ideal for travel. The ground joints are upright and positioned away from the pipe which prevents the main body from getting too close to the heating element.

What Is Dab Rig Made Up Of?

On the surface, a dab rig is very similar to the build of a bong, but there are a few differences. The mouthpiece of a dab rig is very narrow and much smaller than that found on a bong. The chamber of a rig is also much smaller because the rig deals in vapor instead of smoke. The down-stems are fixed joints that are placed in the upright position that allows for banger room. Also, there is a nail for the dabs which replaces the bowl of a bong. This is usually made of quartz, and it is called a quartz banger. This is where the dab will be heated and transformed into vapor.

How Do Dab Rigs Work?

Dab rigs work by transforming concentrates into vapor. This is achieved by using a carefully calibrated temperature to heat them in a quartz banger. This banger is covered with a carb cap that helps create the perfect airflow to generate a strong concentrated, but smooth hit. The other advantage of using a carb cap is that much less of the vapor will escape and will even give you time to take a second draw if required. Once the vapor is created in the banger and chamber, it is inhaled and the carb cap removed from the banger.

While this may seem like the same thing as using a vape pen, there is a big difference between concentrates and liquid vape drops. Also, there is, of course, dosage requirements and flavor purity to consider. Dab rigs are usually made of glass while vape pens tend to be metal or mechanical contraptions. There is a bit of a learning curve, but once you master a dab rig, chances are you will never look back.

Banger Hanger Vs Recycler

There are two types of setups you can use for a dab rig; a banger or a recycler. A banger hanger is the most common and is a simple built that allows for easy filtration with the least amount of water needed. This setup will give you a highly pleasurable hit with very little in terms of complications. A recycler is the other type of setup you can use for a dab rig. This will give you consistent percolation by always moving water through the system to cool the dab hit. In a normal setup, complex percs keep the hit cool. If you want to use an existing water pipe, you can also attach a banger and create an oil rig on your own.

A banger hanger is the term typically used for small water pipes with a fixed 90 degree joint on the front of the rig, where the quartz banger sits (hangs).

Does Size Matter?

In many things, sizes don’t matter. For example, a big bong and a small bong can both produce effective hits that send your head spinning. When it comes to dab rigs, however, size really does matter. The units are intended to be small, and it is always a good idea to choose smaller units when looking for the smoothest experience. Dab starts out as solid concentrates that transform into vapor when heated. When there is a smaller surface area in the rig, then you are assured that you will get a good ratio of oxygen and legal concentrates.
